Music History Tour
In the footsteps of music history – A tour through Hamburg’s old town
Hamburg – a city where music has brought vibrant life and cultural splendor since the 17th century. Our exclusive tour takes you on a fascinating journey through Hamburg’s historic soundscapes and shows you where musical legends were born and history was made.
Tour highlights at a glance
Alsterpavillon:
The tour begins at the charming Alster Pavilion, which has provided a defining setting for Hamburg’s social life since its opening in 1799. Johann Jakob Brahms, for example, played here as a double bassist and horn player – a place that radiated not only sound but also inspiration. Visitors learn how this place influenced the young Johannes Brahms and many other musicians.
Citizens’ Opera at Gänsemarkt:
Just a few steps away was the legendary Bürgeroper, a symbol of Hamburg’s cultural revolution. Greats like Georg Philipp Telemann and Georg Friedrich Handel met in this opera, which paved the way for a wider audience as early as 1678. Fascinating anecdotes—such as the famous 1704 duel between Handel and Johann Mattheson—make this section of the tour particularly vivid.
Valentine’s Day & Laeiszhalle:
The route continues along the historic Valentinskamp, which became the center of Hamburg’s musical life in the 19th century, to the magnificent Laeiszhalle on Johannes-Brahms-Platz. Here you can experience the majestic combination of architecture and music that distinguishes Hamburg as a musical metropolis.
Composers’ Quarter:
In the innovative Composers’ Quarter, you can immerse yourself in the biographies and works of great musicians through audio samples. A historic, mechanical Steinway World grand piano and interactive small museums illustrate the sound worlds of Telemann, C.E.E. Bach, Brahms, Mahler, and other musical icons. This experience combines the past and the present in a unique way.
St. Michaelis – The main church:
The crowning finale is a visit to St. Michael’s Church, Hamburg’s famous main church. Here, if time permits, you’ll experience an impressive organ service—a musical moment that impressively celebrates the tradition of the North German organ school.
