Discover Historic Lüneburg

Experience the charming old town of Lüneburg – a city that comes to life with its lovingly preserved half-timbered houses, rich salt history, musical tradition, and Hanseatic trading heritage. Our certified guides will accompany you on a two-hour walking tour through the old town or as part of a day trip from Hamburg, combining urban history with scenic charm.

Tour Description – City Tour & Day Trip from Hamburg

During the day trip from Hamburg, our guide will introduce you to the history of Lüneburg and the adjacent heathland during the journey. Upon arrival in Lüneburg, the tour begins at the Ochsenmarkt, right by the magnificent town hall, one of the oldest in Germany.

Here, you will experience: The fascinating architecture of the town hall, the carillon of 41 Meissen porcelain bells that chimes daily at 12:00 PM, the intriguing history of one of the typical “pregnant houses” and so much more .

The tour continues through the Michaelis Quarter with its narrow alleys and impressive half-timbered houses. Learn about Johann Sebastian Bach’s youth in Lüneburg and his connection to St. Michael’s Church – a quick look inside is possible depending on opening hours. A special highlight is the historic buildings saved from demolition thanks to the dedication of an individual – featuring their distinctive oriel windows and witty, provocative inscriptions. At the splendid Old Council Pharmacy, you’ll learn more about the role of the pharmacist in Lüneburg’s society.

The tour concludes in the water district with the Council and Abbot’s Mills and the Old Crane – impressive testimonies to Lüneburg’s salt and trading history. The walk ends at the Stintmarkt, where you can relax with coffee or a snack overlooking the Ilmenau River. As part of the day trip, the journey continues into the idyllic Lüneburg Heath (see Heath Day Trips).
