Our tour begins at Hamburg City Hall, a masterpiece of architecture and a symbol of Hanseatic power. Here, you’ll immerse yourself in history: Discover the many small details, such as the “Hummel” figure on the facade, and learn why the people of Hamburg always respond to “Hummel-Hummel” with “Mors-Mors.”
The route will be coordinated with our guide and includes various sights. These may include, among others, St. Petri Church and Hammaburg Square, the nucleus of the city. Take a look at the impressive Afrikahaus, once the headquarters of the Woermann Line and the German East Africa Line. The impressive Chamber of Commerce, once home to Germany’s oldest stock exchange, is a must. Dating from 1841, this building embodies the pride of Hamburg’s merchants and offers fascinating insights into the city’s commercial history.
At the historic Trostbrücke, we encounter Hamburg’s founders in the form of statues. This site was the heart of the city in the Middle Ages – with the town hall, cloth hall, crane, and scales right on the harbor. A special highlight is the ruins of St. Nicholas Church, once Hamburg’s tallest church and now a memorial. The former crypt houses the “Gomorrah” exhibition. Along the Nikolaifleet, we discover some of Hamburg’s oldest buildings, which now house charming restaurants – a perfect combination of history and modern enjoyment.
