Wismar impresses with its well-preserved old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As an important Hanseatic city, it was a key hub of maritime trade and a center of brick Gothic architecture for centuries. Its magnificent town houses, imposing churches, and large market square bear witness to the city’s former wealth and historical significance.
Today, Wismar offers a successful blend of history, maritime flair, and North German coziness. The old, lovingly restored half-timbered houses and winding alleys make a stroll through the city a special experience. Wismar is also known for its lively market culture and charming cafés that invite you to linger.
After this historical highlight, the journey continues to Bad Doberan, one of Germany’s oldest spa towns. The town was founded as a seaside resort by the Duke of Mecklenburg on the recommendation of an English doctor. Thus, Bad Doberan laid the foundation for the tradition of German Baltic Sea resorts. Today, it is known primarily for its magnificent buildings, its idyllic parks, and its cultural significance. Particularly impressive is the Doberan Minster, one of the most beautiful medieval churches in Northern Germany. With its unique rood screen cross and magnificent interior, it represents a masterpiece of North German Brick Gothic architecture.
Another highlight is the “Molli” steam train, which runs through the city and exudes a nostalgic atmosphere. Let yourself be enchanted by the rich history and architectural highlights of these two cities.
Itinerary:
- Bus trip to Wismar.
Travel by private or charter bus. Arrival in Wismar in the morning. - City tour through the historic old town.
Our tour begins on Wismar’s impressive market square, one of the largest in northern Germany. Here we marvel at:
- The famous water art with the figures Nix and Nixe
- The historic town houses around the market square
- The ruins of St. Mary’s Church
- View of the magnificent Renaissance stucco at the Fürstenhof
- Visit St. George’s Church, a masterpiece of brick Gothic architecture
- Visit the Hospital Church of the Holy Spirit, with its artistically designed wooden ceiling that tells biblical stories.
- Filming location of the “Tatort Wismar”: Behind the church we admire the Runde Grube and walk along the Fischergrube to St. Nikolaikirche, which we explore with a short visit to the church interior
- Crossing the Pig Bridge with its funny bronze figures
- Free time for lunch.
Enjoy free time for lunch in the Old Town or on the market square. Enjoy regional specialties in one of the charming restaurants or cafés. - Continuation to Bad Doberan
After lunch we drive to the traditional spa town of Bad Doberan. - Tour of Bad Doberan
