The Vier- und Marschlande are Hamburg’s green oasis, an idyllic paradise of expansive meadows, traditional farmhouses, and historic windmills. This rural region in southeastern Hamburg is characterized by centuries-old agriculture, idyllic waterways, and impressive natural scenery. Originally used as an agricultural area to supply the city of Hamburg, the Vier- und Marschlande have retained their traditional character to this day.

A visit to this region not only offers fascinating insights into rural life, but also exciting stories about old farmer’s wisdom and the importance of this region for Hamburg’s development.

Program schedule:

  1. Trip to the Tatenberger Lock,
    where you will have a magnificent view of the Allermöhe water sports area, including the impressive sailing and rowing regatta course according to Olympic standards.
  2. Ochsenwerder and Reitbrook
    We drive through the idyllic marsh village of Ochsenwerder, characterized by farms and the romantic St. Pankratius Church, before we discover the historic Reitbrook Mill – birthplace of Alfred Lichtwark, the first director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
  3. Curslack and the Rieckhaus.
    The tour continues to Curslack, where you can visit the Rieckhaus, a historic farmhouse dating back to the 16th century. Here, you’ll immerse yourself in the regional culture and language – including humorous insights into Low German sayings.
  4. Altengamme and the Voss House.
    A traditional snack awaits you in the former Voss House—if you wish—before we admire St. Nicholas Church in Altengamme. With its impressive furnishings and unique hat stands, it’s a true gem.
  5. Riepenburger Mill and Organic Farm
    Another highlight is the historic Riepenburger Mill, one of Hamburg’s oldest windmills. A guided tour of the mill’s history and technology can be booked optionally. The journey continues with a visit to a historic organic farm, where you can experience traditional farming – a special place, especially when you see young animals.
  6. Zollenspieker and Elbe Dyke
    At the southernmost point of Hamburg, the Zollenspieker, we find the charming Pegelhäuschen, the smallest restaurant in the region. Optionally, you can enjoy coffee and cake in the historic Zollenspieker Ferry House with a view of the Elbe.
  7. Flower cultivation and return journey.
    On the way back, we can optionally visit a cut flower grower who will provide insights into flower production. Passing Oortkatensee, a popular bathing spot, we return to Hamburg.
