Day 1: Hamburg – Heide

Starting in Hamburg with a brief introduction, we travel through the Haseldorfer Marsch to Glückstadt, the herring stronghold, with visits to the historic market square, the baroque church, and the harbor.

Continue to St. Margarethen and its historic church. Take the free ferry across the Kiel Canal to Brunsbüttel, where you can admire the locks. In Marne, learn more about the North German carnival tradition. Dithmarschen is known for its cabbage cultivation – white, red, savoy, and pointed cabbages characterize the landscape.

In Meldorf, visit the impressive cathedral and stroll through the old town. Continue to Heide and visit the large market square.

After a lunch break, we continue to the Eider Barrage and St. Peter-Ording. A tour of the barrage, a short town tour, and a visit to St. Peter’s Church (12th century) are included. A walk to the pier with a view of the iconic stilt houses.

In Friedrichstadt, a Dutch-influenced old town awaits you with a canal tour. Look out for the historic house signs that indicate the professions or names of former owners. Many churches bear witness to the religious diversity of the former religious refugees.

Overnight stay in Husum, where we will spend two nights.

Day 2: Sylt

Travel by car train over the Hindenburgdamm to Sylt. A tour of the island includes stops at impressive cliffs, expansive beaches, and in Keitum with its local museum and small church. We’ll take a lunch break at Lister Harbor with various dining options. Free time on the beach in Westerland for a relaxing afternoon.

Return to Husum, in the evening the night watchman accompanies us through the “grey city by the sea” and tells scary stories of love, suffering and the dangers on the coast.
